What are Sanding Discs used for?

sanding a fuel tank

Sanding Discs are typically used to rapidly remove waste product from a surface during the preparation process. By using progressively finer grits, sanding discs can also be used to smooth surfaces to prep for polishing. We recommend generally that most start at 180 grit and finish at 400 grit for aluminum. For stainless, a very thorough sanding is likely required and should probably go up to 600 or 800 grit.

After sanding aluminum to 400 grit you'll want to purchase a Brown Tripoli Compound Bar and an Orange Airway Buffing Wheel. After that you'll pair a yellow buffing wheel with a green rouge compound bar.

If you're curious, we'd usually recommend an Aluminum Mini Kit as someone's first choice if they want to dip their toes into polishing metal.

The PSA Film option of the Renegade Products Savage Sanding Discs is perfect for applications that require a firm and secure grip. These sanding discs come in both 5" and 6" sizes and are available in a range of grits, from coarse to fine, to suit your sanding needs.  What sander is best for metal polishing?

We recommend two different sanders that you can use with your sanding process before going into your metal polishing with buffing wheels & buffing compound. One is corded and is great quality and the other is a cordless for those that have a little extra budget and want the added convenience. Both are fantastic quality and work with our sanding discs.

2. Cordless Orbital Sander - Milwaukee Cordless Orbital Sander

How to sand aluminum or stainless steel with a disc sander?

Hook & Loop (Velcro) Sanding Disks are ideal for creating a smooth, even surface prior to polishing. Sanding with progressively finer grits will help to hide pits, scratches & burns to help attain a flawless, mirror-like finish. These discs are designed for polishing both aluminum and stainless steel and are available in 120 grit, 180 grit, 220 grit, 320 grit, 400 grit, 600 grit & 800 grit.

A good rule of thumb when sanding aluminum or stainless is that you should always start with the least aggressive grit possible to get out the imperfections that are on your workpiece such as your gas tank, alcoa wheel, bumper, fender etc. As an example, if you want to get out pits or scratched from a tank, you should first start with a less aggressive grit like 220 or 320 and see if that will get your initial scratch out. If it does then great, less work for you and you can now progress now through the stages of sanding. If it doesn't, go a grit lower to a 180 and see if that gets it out. It is very rare, other than in very bad cases that polishers will need to sand down to a 120 grit or coarser.

While we offer coarse grits such as 120, 180 & 220, we often find that the most common grits for metal polishing are 320, 400! The Brown Tripoli Compound for aluminum polishing (cut stage on aluminum) and the Black Magic Compound for stainless polishing (cut stage on stainless) can get out scratches from the sandpaper at a 400 grit so it is really only necessary to go to a 600 or 800 grit polish if you are a professional and are looking for a show quality shine.
